Description

French Onion Soup is a rich, flavorful dish made with caramelized onions, beef broth, and topped with cheesy, toasted baguette slices. This comforting classic is perfect for cozy evenings or special gatherings.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 8 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 baguette, sliced into 1-inch rounds
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  • Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot. Add sliced onions, sugar, and salt. Cook for 30-40 minutes, stirring often, until caramelized.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add beef broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer for 20-25 minutes. Adjust seasoning.
  • Toast baguette slices in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for 5-7 minutes until golden.
  • Preheat broiler. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with baguette slices, and cover with Gruyère cheese.
  • Broil for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Serve hot.
